I Built a Game to See If I Can Survive Ghana’s New Speed Limits

building with AI games Ghana

Illustration for Blewu, Kadi Yao Tay’s driving game inspired by Ghana’s new speed limits.

My good friend, Kobe Spiky Nkrumah posted an interesting, eye-opening video yesterday. The video's premise was simple - how many people can actually drive, comfortably within the actual speed limits? He was basically wondering if we can actually abide by the new road regulations that are being implemented, aka, Traffitec.

In his test from the video, he tried driving within the speed limit, and he couldn't. It was really amusing and fun to watch, because I've tried something like this before, not on the level he did (I wasn't as patient), and boy, oh, boy, did I feel like pulling my hair out.

We're gonna have a real problem.

I kept thinking about it and wondered what would it be like if I were to drive faithfully within these speed limits. How long is it going to take me to get to work? How long would take me to get anywhere?

How many fines am I going to be paying? I wholeheartedly would rather pay fines than deal with the MTTD folks. I defo do not want to deal with the Police. They're rude, power drunk, greedy, soul sucking and not a lot of self-respect if we're being honest.

The biggest thing for me though is, how many fines am I gonna rack up before I get my license revoked? Remember that your license will be suspended and possibly revoked for a year if you go above the infraction threshold per person (6 within 2 years if I'm not mistaken).

Yikes!

If you've been here, you know I keep messing with AI tools. And what do you know - both Opus 5.5 and Sol 6, Anthropic and OpenAI's latest models just launched so test and tinker away I did!

I orchestrated Opus (did a much better job so just stuck with it) and built a simple web game to test how slowly I'd actually drive, what that's gonna feel like, how can I follow the rules and how many fines I'll rack up. This was more to educate me on the speed limits and get comfortable and see where I'd rank versus when I actually hit the road.

It was a pretty fun build, with very simple graphics and what I hope, is easy to understand game mechanics.

It's called Blewu (translates into calmly but in my case, slowly). You can play Blewu free of charge here. I've played it a number of times and let's just say, herh! I die finish if my in-game antics translates to real life.

I had Alberta play and she racked up GHS780 in fines on just one trip from Achimota to Accra. One trip! 😭 Imagine if she was going to Kumasi. Mumbles to self: I wonder how many infractions the speed cameras will catch on my trip to Ho?* Check it out and lemme know what you think.

Small play we dey play. Ghana Police dierr.

Speaking of play. Thanks to this build, I realized I needed a portal to host all the wacky game ideas that'll wiggle their way into my cranium, be they downright stupid or upleft awesome! It's live at Play with Kadi

I'm torn between play.kaditay.com and games.kaditay.com. Help me decide. More importantly, try Blewu and lemme know what you think.

PS: I have some thoughts on this new traffic dispensation and what it means, focused on the Ghana Police and how else they're going to harass us. I may just publish it or not.

We'll see.
